Winter Weather Could Hinder Friday Travel

For Immediate Release: Jan. 16, 2020

JEFFERSON CITY – A weather system moving through the state late Thursday and into Friday could create slippery driving conditions across the state, especially during Friday’s morning and evening commutes.

Precipitation will begin falling overnight Thursday into Friday morning in the southwest portion of the state and move to the northeast throughout the day producing up to 3 inches of snow and a half-inch of ice. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on morning and evening commutes and consider avoiding driving if possible for the duration of this winter storm. The storm is expected to change to all rain before moving out of the state late Friday, creating the possibility of refreezing of wet roads overnight Friday into Saturday.

MoDOT work crews will be out Thursday night treating ahead of the storm, but drivers should use caution as road conditions could deteriorate rapidly whenever freezing precipitation is falling. It only takes a little bit of ice to create slippery roads.

To check road conditions, go to MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The map is also available as a free app for Apple and Android devices.

MoDOT also provides road condition information through its Customer Service Center. Dial 888-ASK-MODOT (888-275-6636) to speak with a customer service representative 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
