HANNIBAL – The public is invited to view the recommendations the Missouri Department of Transportation is making to improve the U.S. Route 61 corridor through New London, specifically at Route A, 5th Street, Kingsville Road, and the on ramp at the MO 19 interchange. A public informational meeting will be held Tuesday, October 29 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the New London Lion’s Club, located just off of 5th Street along Highway 61 in New London.
Information presented with displays, maps and handouts includes crash history, how we came to this decision, the goals for the project, and the proposed improvements. All information from the public meeting, a video, a survey and comment form, will be available on Monday, October 28 online at www.modot.org/ralls-county.
“Short-term safety improvements have been completed in this area, and we look forward to making further improvements within the next few years,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Untiedt. The recommendations are below:
- Add dedicated right turn lane at on-ramp of U.S. 61/MO 19 interchange
- Install offset left turn lanes on U.S. 61 at Route A (similar to Ross Street in Palmyra)
- Remove access to cross straight over four lanes of U.S. 61 (median crossovers) at Route A, 5th Street, Kingsville Road
- Install median U-turn on U.S. 61 1/3 mile north of Route A
- Additional acceleration and deceleration lanes
“While these improvements can certainly enhance safety, it is the responsibility of all drivers to focus on the task of driving by paying attention to your surroundings, being patient and always wear a seat belt,” Untiedt added.
