JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will close all northbound lanes of Route 291 Bridge over the Missouri River in Sugar Creek beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 until 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18 for prep (setting temporary concrete barriers and striping) work. Southbound traffic will then be reduced to one lane and northbound traffic will be moved to one lane southbound in a head-to-head configuration.
Following the prep work, crews will move northbound traffic back to the northbound side of the Route 291 Bridge, keeping one lane closed starting at 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18 to begin bridge rehabilitation work. The lane closure will last through April 2020.
In September, MoDOT closed one lane of northbound traffic of the Route 291 Bridge due to significant deterioration found during a recent inspection. The 70-year old northbound bridge carries almost 11,000 vehicles daily. All work is weather dependent.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
