MoDOT KC wraps up another successful Snow Academy as winter approaches

JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation, Kansas City District has concluded its 2019 Snow Academy. The academy is to help prepare maintenance workers and supplemental support forces get ready for upcoming winter operations.

 

Those who have been with the Kansas City District less than five years took part in the training. The academy featured in-class instruction, which focused on the various types of equipment used in a snow fight, as well as the types of materials, such as salt, salt brine and beet juice. The larger part of the in-class training focused on the importance of safety and best practices.

 

The snow academy also featured several hands-on training events. It included an obstacle course for plow drivers to show them how to maneuver their vehicle safely and efficiently.

 

Another station on the obstacle course was the front loader training in which operator’s simulated loading salt into snow plow trucks.

Other stations on the course focused on how to install snow chains on tires, how to safely install hanging and standing salt spreaders, and how to safely attach snow plow blades.

 

The Snow Academy took place in Sedalia from September 16-19 and in the Kansas City area from September 23-26.
