JACKSON/CLAY COUNTIES – The Missouri Department of Transportation is set to begin a two year bridge rehabilitation project on the I-435 Bridge over the Missouri River which straddles Jackson and Clay Counties.
Crews will be replacing the bridge deck, reinforcing the structural steel and repairing the substructure of the aging structure. There will also be scour repair work in the Missouri River.
The I-435 Bridge over the Missouri River was built back in 1972 and is showing signs of wear. The bridge sees about 81,500 vehicles each day, most of which are tractor trailers, due to the industrial area near the I-435 and Route 210 Interchange.
Prep work on the project will begin Monday, August 5. This will be mostly the movement of equipment and concrete barriers. Work on the bridge will commence approximately, Monday, August 23 and continue through December of 2021. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes in both directions for the duration of the project.
The I-435 Bridge rehab project will come on the heels of the completion of the I-435 and Route 210 Diverging Diamond Project, which is just north of the bridge. The two projects are being done in tandem to complete as much work as possible in this area as quickly as possible without staging multiple projects over a longer period. Once these bridges are finished, only routine maintenance should be needed for the next 25-30 years.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
