ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A resurfacing project in Andrew County is expected to begin soon. The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted with Vance Brothers to resurface U.S. Route 59/Business U.S. 71 from U.S. Route 71 north of Savannah to Business Loop 29 in Country Club Village. This does not include the southbound lanes between Savannah and Interstate 29, as that was part of a project earlier this year.
Beginning Monday, July 29, 2019, the contractor plans to begin the scrub seal portion of the project. They will begin on the south end of the project and complete both the north and southbound lanes south of I-29 before moving to the sections north of I-29. During the scrub seal portion of the work, crews will work daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays.
Their proposed schedule for the scrub seal (weather permitting and subject to change):
- Monday, July 29 – all lanes south of I-29
- Tuesday, July 30 – north of I-29 to Savannah, northbound lanes only
- Wednesday, July 31 – north of I-29 to Savannah, northbound lanes only
- Thursday, Aug. 1 – all lanes within the city of Savannah
- Friday, Aug. 2 – all lanes north of Savannah
The scrub seal portion must cure for approximately 30 days before the micro surfacing can begin. When the micro surfacing phase begins, crews may work night hours through the city of Savannah. All other micro surfacing is planned for daytime work. During the 30-day cure period for the scrub seal, the contractor may complete some sidewalk work in the city of Savannah.
This combination of a scrub seal and micro surfacing is a preventative maintenance treatment and will help to extend the life of the roadway. Both seal the old pavement and give the roadway a new driving surface. The scrub seal, an emulsified asphalt/aggregate seal, rejuvenates the road’s surface by filling and sealing cracks in the existing asphalt. The micro surfacing that follows helps slow deterioration of the pavement, fills some ruts and minor surface irregularities, reduces water getting into the pavement, and improves surface friction.
While it may look like a typical overlay, normally done with asphalt, it will not ride like one. Minor surface irregularities will benefit from the micro surfacing, making the ride a little smoother, but not like an asphalt overlay. MoDOT does its best to be good stewards of the monies provided by taxpayers. One of the ways is to employ many preventative maintenance methods, such as these. MoDOT continues to look for innovative, efficient ways to maintain the 7th largest highway system in the United States with the 46th ranked funding levels.
