The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission today awarded a contract for improvements to the U.S. Route 50/63 and Shamrock/Liberty Roads intersection near Jefferson City. The project includes:
- Reconstructing and realigning the Liberty Road intersection on Route 50/63.
- Constructing acceleration lanes at North Shamrock Road and at the new Liberty Road intersection.
- Building a right turn lane at the new Liberty Road intersection.
- Adding an eastbound offset left turn in the median.
- Removing two median crossovers.
- Resurfacing Route 50/63 between the Moreau River and the Osage County line.
Magruder Paving was awarded the contract, after submitting the low bid of $2,976,276. Work will take place during the summer of 2017. It will be necessary to close the intersection of Liberty Road with Route 50/63 during construction of the new intersection. Motorists will need to find alternate routes around the project.
“We believe these are the best options for improving safety at the intersection,” said David Silvester, district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District. “They address the two main crash causes at the intersection: motorists making right turns out of North Shamrock Road onto Route 50/63, and drivers making left turns out of South Shamrock/Liberty Lane to head west into Jefferson City. We know these changes will require some motorists to drive a little bit further to get where they’re going, but we believe the changes will reduce the potential for crashes at the intersection.”
