ST. LOUIS – There was a break in the heavy rainfall in the St. Louis region Monday, but rising river water on area highways will continues to disrupt routine travel for motorists this week. Monday morning, there were 77 Missouri roads closed in the St. Louis area and Interstate 44 will close late Monday night.
Interstate 44 at Rte. 141 in Southwest St. Louis County will close sometime overnight Monday and will be closed for the Tuesday morning rush hour. Based on projections from National Weather Service, this closure could be in place throughout the week.
One lane of westbound I-44 will remain open to Bowles for local traffic only. Interstate traffic cannot get through this area.
This closure marks the third spot where I-44 is closed across the state. Motorists planning to travel across the state on I-44, should use I-70 to Kansas City, take I-49 to Joplin, and reconnect to I-44.
Following the closure of I-44, Rte. 109, Rte. 30 east of Rte. 141, Rte. 21@ the Meramec and Rte. 141@Romaine Creek are expected to be closed in that same area by Tuesday morning.
Rte. 100 between Gray Summit and I-270 will be the alternate route for I-44 travelers.
In North St. Louis County, Rte. 67 at West Alton, will have lane restrictions in place, with traffic limited to one lane in each direction by Monday evening rush hour. Southbound traffic will be shifted to northbound lanes in between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
The following major roadways closed: Rte. 30 in St. Clair, Rte. 141 @I-44 and Rte. 79 in St. Charles County.
Currently about 326 Missouri roads and highways are closed and MoDOT call centers are experiencing extremely high call volumes. The fastest way to get info on road closures is to use the Missouri Traveler Information Map by visiting www.modot.org.
Missourians should take precautions when driving through flooded areas: Don’t drive through water on roadways and don’t drive past barricades.
