CALIFORNIA, Mo. - A section of U.S. Route 50 from County Line Road to Mockingbird Road in Moniteau County will be named the "Mid-Mo EMT Phyllis Hunter Shelley Memorial Highway" at a ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 13. The highway dedication will take place at the Mid-Mo Ambulance base located on Highway 87 just north of the Highway 50 and Highway 87 interchange.
Shelley was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 14, 1987, during an ambulance run on Route 50, west of California.
Shelley’s husband, George, and her daughter, Rev. Phyllis Stutzman, will speak at the ceremony. The keynote speaker is Dr. Marilyn Hofmann, Christian Education Director for the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City. Rev. Rudy Beard, retired pastor for the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson City, will give the benediction.
“Although Phyllis’ name appears on the sign, I stress this endeavor has not only been in her memory, but also in recognition for all of the EMTs and paramedics who daily risk their lives serving the citizens of their respective districts, counties and the State of Missouri,” said George Shelley.
Representatives Caleb Jones and David Wood and Senator Mike Kehoe sponsored the legislation designating the route in memory of Phyllis Shelley.
