The sight of tractors, mowers and trimmers will become more prevalent along mid-Missouri roadsides and intersections next week as Missouri Department of Transportation maintenance crews begin the annual mowing season.
“For us, mowing is about safety,” said MoDOT Central District Maintenance Engineer Randy Aulbur. “Our main focus during the mowing season is to provide good visibility for motorists. That’s why we encourage residents to report grass and weeds that block visibility at intersections along state roads.”
In most areas, mowers will make one pass, making cuts up to 15 feet wide, depending on terrain and obstructions. Herbicides will also be used to stunt grass growth, as well as to control brush and stop the spread of noxious weeds.
Routes will be mowed three times through the end of October. When approaching area where crews are mowing, motorists are asked to:
- Be alert for slow-moving trucks and tractors with lights flashing.
- Slow down and focus on the road ahead of you.
- Give crews room to work.
- Be prepared to stop and only pass the mowers if it is safe to do so.
