CAPE GIRARDEAU – Students from six Missouri high schools will participate in a mock DWI crash during the TRACTION – teens taking action to prevent traffic crashes, youth traffic safety leadership training conference in Cape Girardeau July 23-25. Assisting in the mock crash will be Cape Girardeau Fire Department, Cape Girardeau Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Cape County Ambulance Service, Cape County Coroner John Clifton.
WHO: Students from the following six high schools: Cape Central, New Madrid, Saxony Lutheran, Perryville, Scott City and Oran.
WHAT: TRACTION – teens taking action to prevent traffic crashes, Youth Traffic Safety Leadership Training Mock DWI Crash
WHEN: Monday, July 24, 2017, 10:45 a.m.
WHERE: Ray’s Conference Center, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
WHY: From 2014-2016, there were 36 fatal crashes and 145 serious injury crashes involving a substance-impaired driver under 21 years of age. There were 44 people killed and 194 seriously injured in these crashes.
TRACTION – teens taking action to prevent traffic crashes, is a statewide program sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Cape Girardeau Police Department committed to empowering youth to promote safe driving habits for youth while preventing underage drinking, drinking and driving, driver inattention and promoting safety belt usage.
After an initial training session, TRACTION youth create and implement action plans for school and community activities in an effort to reduce unsafe driving habits and the death and serious injury resulting from traffic crashes.
