Missouri Department of Transportation crews are chip sealing a number of routes in Laclede County, including Routes A, W, HH, E, N and H. As a result, motorists will encounter some oily and rocky roads in the area for the next few weeks.
Crews finished chip sealing Route A yesterday and plan on finishing Route W today. Starting July 31, crews will begin chip sealing Route HH with MoDOT vehicles running on Route 5 south of Lebanon to Route HH. Crews will then move to Routes E, N, and H.
Chip sealing is a type of road resurfacing that involves applying a mix of materials to the road to extend the pavement life. The work includes spraying a heated film of asphalt liquid on the road, followed by placing fine rocks or chips on top. The chips are then compacted to make them adhere to the roadway. Finally, the excess loose chips are swept from the surface, leaving an improved roadway that will hold up longer than it would have without the treatment.
Drivers should use caution and reduce their speed when driving over the gravely surface. Motorists should also expect delays and avoid these routes if possible.
