Route 5 in Cooper and Morgan Counties to Receive New Shoulders and Resurfacing

COOPER/MORGAN COUNTIES – A project to repave and add shoulders to 19.5 miles of Missouri Route 5 from Interstate 70 to U.S. Route 50 in Cooper and Morgan Counties will begin on Thursday, Aug. 10.

The work will begin at the Interstate 70 junction in Cooper County and will move south to Route 50 in two-mile increments. The contractor will begin with the shoulder widening portion. Once the work is completed in the southbound lane, the operation will then work its way back north to I-70. After the new shoulders have been constructed, the entire route will be resurfaced.

The work will take place Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day from Aug. 10 through Oct. 6. One lane of Route 5 will be closed during the work. Flaggers and a pilot car will guide motorists through the work zone. Motorists should expect delays and lower their speeds through the area.

Pilot cars help motorists safely navigate through work zones that might include equipment crossings, difficult crossroads, lane changes or other obstacles.

Here’s how it works: At each end of the work zone, a flagger will stop traffic until the pilot car is ready to lead vehicles through the work area. The pilot car will then guide vehicles safely through the work zone and will pull off the road at the end of the work zone to allow the travelers to continue on their way. The car will then repeat the process, traveling in the other direction. If you are attempting to leave your driveway, please wait until the pilot car passes in the direction you wish to travel, and fall in behind the last car traveling in that direction.
