TARKIO, Mo. – Contractors from Boone Construction Company of Columbia, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, have pushed back the start date for the U.S. Route 136 East Fork of the Little Tarkio Creek Bridge replacement project to Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017. Crews will close the bridge very near the Atchison and Nodaway County border to all traffic beginning at approximately 8 a.m. The road will remain closed through November. Motorists will be directed around the closure onto routes N, 46 and 113 via a signed detour.
All schedules are weather dependent and subject to change.
The current bridge has served the travelers in Nodaway and Atchison counties well since 1929. Carrying more than 900 cars and trucks each day has taken its wear and tear, however, and the bridge is in need of replacement.
The new bridge will be rebuilt in the same alignment as the old bridge. Travelers over the new structure will see not only roadway improvements but also safety enhancements: a 32-foot wide bridge with four-foot shoulders. This will be 12 feet wider than the current bridge, which does not have any shoulders. The new bridge will also be a single span with no middle support. This will cut down on the drift and debris that can currently accumulate against the central piers during flooding events.
