Route 65 Six-Laning Project - Springfield

Update for Week of October 2, 2017
  • Northbound Route 65 traffic scheduled to move to new bridge over Springfield Lake late in week
  • Northbound Route 65 lane and ramp closings early in week preparing for northbound traffic switch

Work Scheduled:  

  • Paving work on northbound Route 65 north and south of new Springfield Lake bridge
  • Cleaning up areas around new Springfield Lake bridge
  • Applying temporary pavement striping on northbound Route 65 north and south of new bridge 

Traffic Impacts:  

  • NIGHT WORK:
    • Lane closings on northbound Route 65 at Springfield Lake bridge. Work hours: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 2-4.
    • Northbound Route 65-to-westbound Route 60 ramp CLOSED. Work hours: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday-Wednesday, Oct. 2-4.
    • During ramp closing, drivers urged to use other northbound Route 65 interchanges to reach Route 60.
  • Trucks and other equipment entering and leaving Route 65 work areas
  • NORTHBOUND ROUTE 65 TRAFFIC MOVED TO SOUTHBOUND SPRINGFIELD LAKE BRIDGE until late in week of Oct. 2.
    • Slight traffic delays occurring northbound during morning rush hour
    • Northbound speed limit reduced to 45 mph; further reduced to 40 mph in crossovers
    • Route 65 will remain open to four lanes most of the time
    • Northbound traffic will remain on southbound bridge until late summer 2017
    • Southbound Route 65 ramp from eastbound Route 60 extended across Springfield Lake bridge. Drivers encouraged to use extended ramp and merge into southbound Route 65 after crossing bridge.
  • ROAD/TRAIL CLOSINGS:
    • Drivers urged to use alternate routes to get around the Timbercrest Road closing
    • Trail users are urged to use other Greenways trails in the area
    • Route 65 speed limit reduced to 55 mph in work zoneTimbercrest Road underneath Route 65, the Galloway Greenways trail and the James River Water trail CLOSED until fall 2017

Project Summary:

  • Widen Route 65 to six lanes — three lanes in each direction — between Route 60 and a point south of Evans Road to continue the progress to six lane Route 65 toward Ozark
  • Widen and rehabilitate southbound Route 65 bridge over Lake Springfield to accommodate new lanes and to lengthen eastbound Route 60-to-southbound Route 65 ramp
  • Replace northbound Route 65 bridge over Lake Springfield with new, wider span to replace old bridge in constant need of repair
  • Extend northbound Route 65 ramps to Route 60
  • Prime Contractor: Emery Sapp and Sons, Columbia
  • Completion Date: November 1, 2017
  • Total Project Cost: $21 million
