Chestnut Railroad Bridge Project in Springfield

Update for Week of October 2
  • CHESTNUT EXPRESSWAY TRAFFIC SCHEDULED TO MOVE TO NEW RAILROAD BRIDGE MONDAY NIGHT, OCT. 2
  • Chestnut Expressway CLOSED Monday night, Oct. 2, when traffic is moved to new bridge 

Work Scheduled:  

  • Building barrier wall on east side of Chestnut Expressway railroad bridge
  • Paving McDaniel Street and access road underneath new bridge
  • Building footings and columns for north third of new bridge 

Traffic Impacts:  

  • ROAD CLOSING: Chestnut Expressway CLOSED at railroad bridge west of Route 65 during nighttime hours
    • Work hours: 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday into Tuesday, Oct. 2-3
    • Ingram Mill Road remains open during Chestnut Expressway closing
    • Chestnut Expressway traffic detoured using Ingram Mill Road, Cherry Street, Union Avenue, Cairo Street and Belcrest Avenue
  • CHESTNUT EXPRESSWAY TRAFFIC MOVED TO RAILROAD BRIDGE by Tuesday morning, Oct 3:
    • Traffic configuration will remain the same – two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane open across bridge until north side of structure can be completed
    • Left turns remain restricted at Belcrest Avenue intersection with Chestnut Expressway
  • CHESTNUT EXPRESSWAY TRAFFIC USING TEMPORARY BYPASS UNTIL TUESDAY MORNING, OCT. 3:
    • Expect traffic backups and delays on eastbound Chestnut Expressway west of Belcrest Avenue at heavy traffic volume times. Drivers urged to use both eastbound lanes and take turns merging into one lane as they enter work zone.
    • Chestnut Expressway traffic shifted to north of existing roadway
    • Two westbound lanes open
    • One eastbound lane open
    • Left-turns restricted at Belcrest Avenue/Chestnut Expressway intersection. Drivers urged to obey restricted left turns.
    • Drivers urged to find alternate routes including Kearney Street and Sunshine Street to reach downtown areas of Springfield
  • Drivers will need to use Rockhurst Street (take Belcrest Avenue one block north of Chestnut Expressway) to reach businesses in Chestnut Warehouse complex. Business entrance from Chestnut Expressway temporarily closed to make way for north third of new railroad bridge and to raise elevation for future business entrance.

Project Summary:

  • Build a bridge on Chestnut Expressway over the railroad tracks west of Route 65
  • Build new roads on either side of Chestnut Expressway to provide access to area businesses
  • Install a new traffic signal at Ingram Mill Road and Chestnut Expressway
  • First phase of construction: June to December 2016. Prime contractor: D&E Blasting & Excavating, Nixa -- COMPLETED
  • Second phase of construction: January 2017 to November 2017. Prime contractor: Lehman Construction Company, California 
  • Partnership project: Springfield, Greene County, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad & MoDOT
  • Completion Date: November 2017
  • Total Project Cost: $14.8 million
