U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue Resurfacing Project Awarded in Marion and Ralls Counties

HANNIBAL – The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently awarded a contract to Chester Bross of Palmyra, Missouri, for a resurfacing project on U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue. The resurfacing of all lanes begins approximately at the intersection of Missouri Route 168 in Hannibal to the intersection of Warren Barrett in Hannibal. The project will also consist of improving the intersection at Stardust Drive, adding new sidewalks to the west side of McMasters Avenue between Stardust Drive and Washita Avenue, replacing the sidewalks on the east side of McMasters Avenue between Stardust Drive and Route 36, improving drainage to relieve flooding, as well as adding new signage near the U.S. Route 36 interchange. The total cost of the project is $5,213,662.

“This construction project will have several phases, and we will inform the public through social media, local press, and public meetings of the progress along the way,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner.

Lane reductions will be required to complete the resurfacing work throughout the work zone. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between US Route 36 and Stardust Drive by temporarily removing the center turn lane, which will temporarily eliminate the ability to turn left onto or off of McMasters Avenue while the sidewalk construction takes place. During the portion of work at the Stardust Drive intersection, the entrances to Stardust Drive and Pirate Pride Drive off of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue will be closed. The work could begin as early as this spring and should be completed before next fall.

“A more specific schedule will be shared once the contractor has developed a plan to complete the work,” Haeffner added. A meeting with local business owners, the Hannibal School District, and an open public meeting were held last summer at the MoDOT District Office in Hannibal.
