MoDOT to start bridge work on I-44 between Kingshighway and Grand

ST. LOUIS – Next week, crews will start work on a two-year construction project to update several bridges on I-44 in St. Louis City between Kingshighway and Grand.

This work replaces interstate bridges at Kingshighway, Thurman and 39th Street and rehabilitates interstate bridges over Vandeventer, Tower Grove and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. Ultimately, the department will close one lane in each direction and shift traffic around the bridge work through early 2020.

Starting March 12, crews will close one lane on westbound I-44 between Grand and Kingshighway from 6:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. weekdays. Crews will shift westbound traffic into the three right lanes, starting March 19, and will start setting barrier wall along the closed left lane. When all the barrier wall has been set, most likely in late March, they will close the left lane on eastbound I-44 and shift the three remaining lanes into the westbound lanes near Tower Grove.

Later this spring, the traffic shift will expand to just before Kingshighway as work begins on the other bridges on the project. More details on that, and other details on roadway closures under the interstate, will be released as they become available.

Primarily crews will work on eastbound bridges this year, and will work on westbound bridges next year. At the end of the project, crews will put a new driving surface on I-44 between Kingshighway and I-55.

People using I-44 for their commute should consider using I-64 or I-70, taking Metro, using ridesharing or carpooling, or allowing themselves extra time as MoDOT will close eastbound I-44/northbound I-55 for pavement work over the weekend.
