MACON – The Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety has partnered with the Student Public Health Association (SPHA) of Truman State University to bring an interactive presentation to increase awareness about the dangers of distracted driving to the Truman State University campus in Kirksville. “Drive Means Drive” in conjunction with SPHA, Truman, KRXL/KIRX/KTUF, and the Coalition will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Little Baldwin Theater on Truman’s campus. It is open to the public. A flyer is attached to this email; please consider forwarding this information or distributing the flyer to others within the community.
“The student organization was looking for a project when we received information about the Buckle Up/Phone Down campaign being promoted by the Coalition for Roadway Safety and the Missouri Department of Transportation. Buckle Up/Phone Down is an appropriate project that can impact so many students’ and area residents’ lives,” said Dr. Janice Clark, faculty advisor for SPHA. She and the Health Science students want to emphasize the dangers of distracted driving and help prevent potential injuries.
“We have been working with the local radio stations, law enforcement, health departments, and schools, among other agencies to get people to understand drive means drive, not texting, not eating, not talking on the phone, so it was a perfect fit when Dr. Clark contacted us,” said Marisa Ellison, facilitator for the NE Coalition for Roadway Safety. Included on the program with Ellison is Sgt. Eric Brown, with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Troop B, an officer from the City of Kirksville Police Department, and Chuck Knight, radio personality for KRXL radio.
“Attendees have the opportunity to learn valuable information on distracted driving in an interactive way, and we encourage everyone to bring their smartphone for our game, which is part of the presentation,” Ellison explained.
