ST. LOUIS – Drivers who use the Shrewsbury ramp to travel east on I-44 will need to use an alternate route starting Wednesday afternoon.
Crews will close the ramp from Shrewsbury in St. Louis County to eastbound I-44 after 12 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, weather permitting. The ramp will remain closed until December 2018.
In addition, they will close two lanes on eastbound I-44 at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 15 to shift traffic onto the westbound I-44 lanes. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., crews will have three lanes of I-44 closed for about a half-hour to complete the switch. At 2 p.m., three lanes of eastbound I-44 traffic will be shifted onto the westbound I-44 lanes, and one lane will remain closed, around-the-clock, until December 2018.
To detour around the ramp closure, drivers can access eastbound I-44 at Arsenal. The westbound ramp at Shrewsbury will not be impacted by the ongoing construction.
Since there will be two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane closed around the clock, drivers should consider alternate routes, shifting their commute time or telecommuting (if possible) or using transit, carpooling or ride share options to avoid congestion, especially during the evening commute.
This construction replaces the eastbound I-44 bridge over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. It started in 2017, with a similar replacement of the westbound I-44 bridge over the tracks.
