JEFFERSON CITY – Temporary work to repair failing pavement at the intersection of Dix Road and Missouri Boulevard in Jefferson City will begin tonight.
Crews will work to shore up a section of sinking pavement in the middle of the intersection that was caused by a recent water main break. The work will begin at 7:30 p.m. and should be completed before morning rush hour on Thursday.
Only one eastbound and one westbound lane of Missouri Boulevard will remain open through the intersection during the work. Through and left turn movements from southbound Dix Road to Missouri Boulevard will be closed.
“This emergency repair work will stabilize the area, but folks will still experience a dip in the road until we are able to make more permanent repairs,” said David Silvester, district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District. “The winter ice and snow, coupled with large amounts of rainfall, have strained repairs we made in October when a water main burst and damaged a large section of the roadway.”
Missouri American Water, the utility owner, had hoped to be able to make the repairs themselves, but the extent of the work will require contracting the job. As a result, MoDOT will make temporary repairs overnight tonight and will follow up with more permanent repairs in the next few months.
MoDOT urges motorists to lower their speed through the intersection and travel with caution while the work is underway.
“We know this intersection serves a lot of businesses and travelers in Jefferson City, and we ask everyone to be patient with us as we work to make these temporary repairs,” Silvester said. “Weather permitting, we hope to have a permanent fix in place by early June.”
