HANNIBAL – Weather permitting, improvements on U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue will begin on Monday, April 30. The project begins north of the Missouri Route 168 interchange in Hannibal and continues to just north of Warren Barrett Drive. Chester Bross of Palmyra was awarded the project for just over $5.2 million.
“This construction project will have several phases. In mid-May the center turn lane will be closed between Stardust Drive and U.S. Route 36/ Interstate 72 so work can begin to improve curbs, gutters and sidewalks,” explained MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner, P.E. “During this time, the section between Stardust Drive and the I-72 interchange will allow only right in, right out only turn,” he said. Once all the sidewalk, curb and gutter work is completed, the center turn lane will be reopened.
“Between June 18 and August 6, Stardust Drive and Pirate Pride Drive will be closed to improve that intersection, but it will not impede U.S. Route 61 traffic from driving on U.S. 61/McMaster’s Avenue,” Haeffner said. He added that new signage near the U.S. Route 36 interchange also will be installed and much of the work will be done overnight between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
All lanes of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue will be resurfaced once the other improvements are completed. “The resurfacing portion of the project is expected to take place in September and the project will be complete by mid-October,” Haeffner said, stressing that the work schedule is weather permitting.
