JEFFERSON CITY – Starting Monday, May 7, motorists traveling on eastbound and westbound U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City will encounter a resurfacing and bridge improvement project that will be active from the Missouri River Bridge to just south of the Stadium Boulevard interchange.
The project includes resurfacing, pavement repair, shoulder repair, and guardrail upgrades. Six bridges will also be rehabilitated as part of the project: the eastbound and westbound Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard, the eastbound and westbound bridges over Broadway Street, the Madison Street Route 54 on-ramp bridge and the ramp bridge that carries eastbound Route 50 to eastbound Route 54. High Friction Surface Treatment will also be reinstalled on the Route 54 curves at Madison Street.
Rehabilitation work on the eastbound Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard and Broadway Street will begin on May 7. One lane of eastbound Route 54 will be closed 24-hours a day from south of Stadium Boulevard to north of Broadway Street. During this work the on-ramp from Christy Drive to eastbound Route 54 will also be closed. Both lanes of traffic will be open for the Memorial Day weekend. After Memorial Day, the lane and ramp closure will resume and will remain in place until work is completed on the eastbound bridges in mid-June.
Rehabilitation work on the ramp bridge that carries eastbound Route 50 to eastbound Route 54, located on the east loop leg of the tri-level, is tentatively scheduled to begin on June 11. This work will result in the following around-the-clock ramp closures: westbound Route 54 to Route 50 and Southbound 63; eastbound Route 54 to Route 50 and southbound Route 63; eastbound Route 50 to Route 54 and northbound Route 63. The detour route for all ramp closures is Business Route 50 (Missouri Boulevard). Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by June 25.
The rehabilitation of the westbound Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard and Broadway Street and the Route 54 on-ramp from Madison Street bridge is tentatively scheduled to begin July 9. Route 54 will be reduced to one lane 24 hours a day from north of Broadway to south of Stadium during the work. The Route 54 on-ramp from Madison Street will also be closed. Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed on the westbound bridges and the on-ramp by Aug. 6.
After the bridge work is complete, there will be nightly lane closures on Route 54 and the adjacent ramps to perform pavement resurfacing work. The nightly work hours are from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. All of the work is scheduled to be complete by November 1.
Motorists should expect congestion on Route 54 in and near active work zones during peak travel times, including morning and evening rush hours and weekends, especially Friday evenings and Sundays. Motorists should allow for extra time to reach their destination and should plan for alternate routes when on- and off-ramps are closed as part of this project.
