JEFFERSON CITY – The first phase of a resurfacing and bridge improvement project on U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City begins Monday, May 7 with bridge rehabilitation work on the eastbound Route 54 bridges over Broadway Street and Stadium Boulevard.
Starting Monday, the work will close one lane of eastbound Route 54 around-the-clock from south of Stadium Boulevard to north of Broadway Street. During this work, the on-ramp from Christy Drive to eastbound Route 54 will also be closed. Work will be suspended for the Memorial Day weekend and both lanes of traffic will be open through Memorial Day. After Memorial Day, the lane and ramp closure will resume and will remain active until mid-June.
Detours for the Christy Drive on-ramp closure will be the Lafayette Street or the Ellis Boulevard/Southwest Boulevard interchanges.
Motorists should expect congestion on Route 54 in and near the work zone during peak travel times, including morning and evening rush hours and weekends, especially Friday evenings and Sundays. Motorists should allow for extra time to reach their destination and should plan for alternate routes, if possible.
Other phases of the project will include work on the ramp bridge that carries eastbound Route 50 to eastbound Route 54, located on the east loop leg of the tri-level; the rehabilitation of the westbound Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard and Broadway Street and the Route 54 on-ramp from the Madison Street bridge; and evening pavement resurfacing work on both directions of Route 54 from the Missouri River Bridge to Stadium Boulevard.
The entire project is scheduled to be complete by November 1.
The project also includes pavement repair, shoulder repair, and guardrail upgrades. High Friction Surface Treatment will also be reinstalled on the Route 54 curves at Madison Street.
