I-44 Resurfacing/Guardrail/Ramp Extension Project

Between Sarcoxie and Halltown Starting June 1

Jasper/Lawrence Counties – A project to resurface Interstate 44 in both directions between Sarcoxie and the Greene/Lawrence county line east of Halltown (Mile Markers 29-60) is scheduled to start on Friday, June 1, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The project also includes replacing guardrail and extending interchange ramps in several locations.

The work begins Friday, June 1, with ‘round the clock lane closings at various bridges. Crews will modify the ends of several bridges where new guardrail will be attached.

Along with the guardrail work, crews will begin work to extend several interchange ramps.

Here is the listing of interchanges where ramps will be extended:

  • Jasper County Route U east of Sarcoxie (Mile Marker 29)
  • Route 97 west of Mt. Vernon (Mile Marker 38)
  • Route 174 east of Mt. Vernon (Mile Marker 49)

Starting in mid-June, contractor crews will work at night to grind off the top layer of old asphalt and lay a new driving surface on I-44. During the resurfacing work, crews will work between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Traffic impacts:

  • Drivers can expect traffic slowdowns during the ‘round the clock lane closings at bridges
  • During the resurfacing work, drivers can expect lanes closed, crews and equipment close to traffic and large, bright lights illuminating the work zones
  • Drivers can expect crews and equipment close to traffic
  • Contractor crews plan to complete the 31-mile long project in phases

The entire project is scheduled for completion by November 1, 2019. However, contractor crews expect the project to be complete by late 2018.

The prime contractor doing the work is APAC-Central of Fayetteville, Ark.

The estimated project cost is $14 million.
