Next Phase of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue Improvements to Begin

Center Turn Lane Will Close between Stardust Drive and U.S. 36/I-72 Interchange

HANNIBAL – Weather permitting, early next week after the Memorial Day holiday, the U.S. Route 61/McMasters Avenue center turn lane will be closed between Stardust Drive and U.S. Route 36/ Interstate 72 for the curb, gutter and sidewalk improvements.  During this time, the section between Stardust Drive and the I-72 interchange will allow right in, right out only turns; no left turns.  Once the sidewalk, curb and gutter work is completed on both sides of McMaster’s Avenue, the center turn lane will be reopened.  “There will still be two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound open to traffic, and no left turns will be allowed for safety purposes,” explained Missouri Department of Transportation Area Engineer Brian Haeffner.  “Since we are using a lane to do the roadside work, the contractor could work during the day and at night,” he added.

Between June 18 and August 6, Stardust Drive and Pirate Pride Drive will be closed to improve that intersection, but it will not impede U.S. Route 61 traffic from driving on U.S. 61/McMaster’s Avenue.  The new signage near the U.S. Route 36 interchange also will be installed and much of the work will be done overnight between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.

All lanes of U.S. 61/McMasters Avenue will be resurfaced once the other improvements are completed.  The resurfacing portion of the project is expected to take place in September and the project will be complete by mid-October.

The project begins north of the Missouri Route 168 interchange in Hannibal and continues to just north of Warren Barrett Drive.  Chester Bross of Palmyra was awarded the project for just over $5.2 million.
