ST. LOUIS - Drivers in North St. Louis County who use the I-70 and Lucas-Hunt (Route U) interchange, as well as I-270 near Dorsett may want to find alternate routes around these areas starting next month.
Starting June 9, crews will continue construction on the Fee Fee bridge that will require around-the-clock lane closures on I-270. The bridge is located under the highway between Dorsett and I-70.
Drivers can expect increased congestion as I-270 will only have three lanes open northbound and southbound from I-70 to Dorsett Road. Motorists may experience up to 30-minute delays, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
The lane closures are expected to last through late July and will include a 2-week closure of the northbound I-270 ramp to Dorsett Road. More detailed information regarding this construction will be provided in early June.
In addition, on June 11, drivers will notice a ramp closure as well as some changes in traffic patterns on the I-70 and Lucas-Hunt interchange.
Crews will close the westbound I-70 exit ramp to Lucas-Hunt. The ramp will remain closed around-the-clock for 7 weeks.
Suggested detour for drivers on westbound I-70 is to take Florissant Road to I-70 east and exit at Lucas-Hunt. Detour signs will be in place.
Also, drivers traveling on northbound Lucas-Hunt will access westbound I-70 from the left lane. The current exit ramp, from the right lane, will close permanently. Drivers traveling around the interchange should use caution and pay attention after the changes as they, and other travelers, get used to the new traffic patterns.
This will be the second of several changes coming to the Route U and I-70 interchange as part of continuing work to improve the flow of traffic around the interchange.
Motorists are encouraged to give themselves extra time, slow down and pay attention while driving through these construction areas. For more information about work zones throughout the St. Louis district, please visit http://traveler.modot.org/map.
