Work to Begin on Westbound Route 54 Bridges in Jefferson City on July 9

One Lane Closed on Westbound Route 54 During Work

JEFFERSON CITY – The Route 54 resurfacing and bridge improvement project in Jefferson City will move into its third stage on Monday, July 9 with the rehabilitation of the westbound U.S. Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard and Broadway Street, as well as work on the Route 54 on-ramp from the Madison Street bridge.

During the work, westbound Route 54 will be reduced to one lane 24 hours a day from north of Broadway to south of Stadium. The Route 54 on-ramp from Madison Street will also be closed during the work. Work is tentatively scheduled to be completed on the westbound bridges and the on-ramp by Aug. 6.

After the westbound bridge work is complete, the project will move into its fourth stage where there will be nightly lane closures on Route 54 and the adjacent ramps to perform pavement resurfacing work. The nightly work hours will be from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. All of the work is scheduled to be complete by November 1.

Motorists should expect congestion on Route 54 in and near active work zones during peak travel times, including morning and evening rush hours and weekends, especially Friday evenings and Sundays. Motorists should allow for extra time to reach their destination and should plan for alternate routes when on- and off-ramps are closed as part of this project.

The bridge improvement and resurfacing project includes resurfacing, pavement repair, shoulder repair, and guardrail upgrades on Route 54 from the Missouri River Bridge to just south of the Stadium Boulevard interchange. Six bridges are also being rehabilitated as part of the project. Work on the eastbound Route 54 bridges over Stadium Boulevard and Broadway Street has been completed. Rehabilitation work on the ramp bridge that carries eastbound Route 50 to eastbound Route 54/northbound Route 63 has also been completed. High Friction Surface Treatment will also be reinstalled on the Route 54 curves at Madison Street as part of this project.
