ST LOUIS – A portion of the new overpass being built on Route 61 in St. Charles County will open to traffic tomorrow. Crews will close one lane on northbound Route 61 before Route P starting at 8 p.m. tonight to shift traffic and stripe the road.
When the lane reopens by 5 a.m. tomorrow, the new ramp from northbound Route 61 to Route P will be open as will the new roundabout and a portion of David Hoekel Parkway.
There will still be no access from Route P to northbound or southbound Route 61. That portion of the new overpass will open later this summer. The overpass taking traffic from northbound Route 61 to Peine Road will open this fall, while the southbound Route 61 on and off ramps at Route P will open by next summer.
The new overpass is part of a project to improve safety on Route 61. In addition to the overpass that will serve Route P and Peine Road, the crossovers at Grothe Road and both Granville Drives will be closed. Merging and turning lanes will also be extended. The project is expected to be completed next summer. For more information on the project go to http://www.modot.org/stlouis/major_projects/Route61SafetyProject.htm.
