Signal to Be Changed to Flash at MO 79/3rd Street and Center Street Intersection in Hannibal

MACON – Motorists are going to see a change as they are driving through the Missouri Route 79 and Center Street intersection in Hannibal.

“After reviewing the operation of the signal and traffic patterns at this location, it has been determined that a traffic signal is no longer needed,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Haeffner, P.E.

The process of removing a signal involves evaluation of traffic flow for some time as the signal operates in flashing mode.  Engineers will observe the intersection and several intersections around it to ensure the change will be safe and won’t cause excessive delay.  MoDOT had previously discussed this possibility with the city, however after a crash over the weekend that damaged a signal pole, it was decided to implement this change now.

Starting tomorrow morning, crews will be turning the signal on flashing yellow for MO 79/3rd St. and flashing red for Center St.  MO 79/3rd Street will be free flowing traffic and Center Street will be stopped.  MoDOT may pursue complete removal of the signal based on a final traffic study in two months, which would result in stop signs being permanently installed on Center St.

“We hope these changes will better meet driver expectations. Nearby intersections such as North Street, Hill Street, Bird Street and Church Street are all configured this same way,” Haeffner added.

Please use caution if you will be traveling through this area, and be aware of traffic control and flow. Always remember to slow down and obey all work zone signs and personnel, and put your cell phone down to help eliminate distractions.
