ST. LOUIS – Pedestrians who use the pedestrian bridge over I-44 between Kingshighway and Edwards will need to use one of those two interstate crossings for the foreseeable future.
MoDOT will close the I-44 pedestrian bridge over the interstate this afternoon (Monday, August 6), before afternoon rush for safety.
“We recently completed a routine safety inspection on this bridge. During that inspection, we noticed that concrete on the bridge is starting to significantly deteriorate, creating tripping hazards for pedestrians and possible falling debris for drivers on I-44,” said Michelle Forneris, MoDOT’s area engineer for the St. Louis City area.
The bridge is scheduled to be replaced, starting in December, as part of the current project replacing or renovating six other bridges on I-44 between Kingshighway and Grand. The bridge will remain closed until the new bridge is completed in spring 2019.
While the bridge remains closed, pedestrians will need to use Kingshighway or Edwards to cross the interstate. Currently, many pedestrians use the bridge each day.
