ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A new signal cabinet and flashing yellow arrow signals are coming Nov. 8 to the intersection of Northridge Drive, Loop 29 (Belt Highway) and the Shoppes at North Village. Changing the signal cabinet is part of routine signal maintenance. Our signal crew will take advantage of the work and change out the signal heads for southbound Belt Highway to flashing yellow arrows.
Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 8, all left-turn lanes will be closed. The through lanes from both Northridge Drive and the Shoppes at North Village will also be closed. Traffic exiting the Shoppes or the housing subdivision will have to turn right onto the Belt Highway. Northbound drivers on the Belt Highway will not be able to turn left onto Northridge Drive into the subdivision. Southbound drivers on the Belt Highway will not be able to turn left into the Shoppes.
During the signal work, it may be necessary to turn off the power at the intersection for brief periods of time. Drivers are reminded that whenever a signal is dark or in flash mode, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop.
Flashing yellow arrows are not new to St. Joseph and are in use in many areas of Northwest Missouri and across the country. They have proven to increase safety and reduce crashes. By changing to a flashing yellow arrow, two directions aren’t shown a green signal at the same time.
They work in a similar way to the old ‘yield on green’ signals. Red means stop, as it always has. A solid yellow arrow indicates the light is about to turn solid red. A flashing yellow arrow means drivers may turn, but must yield to pedestrians and oncoming traffic. A green arrow lets you know when you are clear to turn left and oncoming traffic has a red light.
