ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After the events of the past few weeks, we can definitely say that winter is in full swing. For the Missouri Department of Transportation that means our maintenance crews have been pulled away from their planned road projects to battle winter weather. Since November 2018 crews across the district have been called out 10 times to work continuous winter weather operations, often for days in a row. These back-to-back storms have also taken a toll on equipment and the roadways.
Potholes are formed when moisture seeps beneath the pavement surface and freezes, causing the pavement to expand and buckle. With moisture and freezing temperatures being common themes in recent Missouri weather, potholes have been occurring across the state. Our crews have been working diligently on winter projects such as filling potholes between each storm that passes through. Individuals are encouraged to report potholes by submitting an online concern at modot.org/report-road-concern or by contacting Customer Service at 888 ASK MODOT (1-888-275-6636).
MoDOT reminds the public to stay alert and watch for road work, crews and snow plows on roadways. To see where crews plan to work, motorists should consult the Traveler Information Map at modot.org or download the MoDOT app for their mobile device. The Map and App also give motorists a glimpse at road conditions, traffic congestion, and even allows them to view the cameras along major roadways.
As always, for your safety, buckle up and put your phone down, slow down and drive with extreme caution through work zones and in changing weather conditions.
