MoDOT restores 900 lights along 71 Highway in KC

JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation is happy to announce that close to 900 streets lights along the 71 Highway corridor in Kansas City, MO are back online.

The stretch of highway from 18th St. to 95th St. is completely lit again thanks to MoDOT’s Traffic and Signals Department, along with Capitol Electric who restored power or repaired more than 884 lights darkened by copper thefts. Crews installed new overhead lines and used aluminum wire instead of copper, which will help detour future thefts. They also replaced more than 400 lights with new LED lights.

This 11-mile stretch of US 71 (Bruce R. Watkins) from I-70 (downtown) to I-435 (3-Trails Crossing) has been one of the hardest hit areas due to copper thefts.

Crews will now address the same lighting issue in the downtown loop area (I-70/I-670/I-29/I-35) of Kansas City.

MoDOT ask that the Kansas City community help us keep the lights on by watching and reporting suspicious activity.
