MoDOT Holds Joint Meeting to Discuss Bollinger County Projects

SIKESTON- The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a joint meeting, a combination of the Route 34 public hearing and a Safe and Sound community briefing, to discuss upcoming Bollinger County projects on Thursday, May 27.  MoDOT staff will be on hand to discuss preliminary design plans for Route 34 and the Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Woodland Elementary School gymnasium, located in Marble Hill.

The Route 34 project will include grading, paving and realignment of curves from Glenallen to Marble Hill. Additionally, the bridge over Gimlet Creek will be replaced. MoDOT expects to begin purchasing necessary right of way in fall 2010. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2012.

Improvements to Bollinger County bridges through the design-build portion of the Safe and Sound program could begin as early as this September.  Unlike the work completed on the Route BB bridge over Little Muddy Creek, which consisted of a deck replacement, these projects will consist of total replacements. Area bridges scheduled for replacement include: two bridges on Route BB over Little River Ditch No. 11 and the Route V bridge over Drainage Ditch No. 101. As construction is underway, the bridges will remain closed.

Additionally, three Route 34 bridges in Cape Girardeau County will be discussed.  The bridges located over Whitewater River, Byrd Creek and Whitewater Overflow will be closed and replaced from mid-May to mid-August 2011.  During construction, detour routes will be posted over Routes OO and Z.
