Project Summary
The Missouri Department of Transportation will be upgrading the westbound St. Clair weigh scale site (1032 N Service Rd W, St Clair, MO 63077) in Franklin County. The 1950's westbound weigh scale site was closed for renovations in October 2023. Shortly after closing, the westbound weigh scale operations were transferred over to the eastbound weigh scale site. Currently, the eastbound weigh scale site is open for operations. Construction on the westbound weigh scale site is ongoing through 2024. MoDOT anticipates reopening the westbound weigh scale site in Mid-2027.
The project is in combination with a pavement resurfacing, signing, and guardrail project on Interstate 44 from the Crawford County Line to 0.5 miles east of the Route 30 overpass in St. Clair. The Interstate 44 project will be awarded in Fiscal 2027 and will include improvements to St. Clair rest area and weigh scales.

What's currently happening?
Last year, during October 2023, MoDOT coordinated with the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) to close the westbound weigh scale site and MSHP moved over to the eastbound weigh scale site to continue their operations. Subsequently as the MSHP resumes their daily work operations out of the eastbound weigh scale site, renovation to westbound scale site is underway. These renovations consist of a new 110-foot static scale, scale house, inspection building, upgraded lighting/signing, and a new parking lot.
A demolition plan to remove the 1950's masonry block weigh scale building was a part of the first series of projects pertaining to the weigh scale sites on Interstate 44 in St. Clair. Following the site preparation, an award for the construction of the new 110-foot static scale, scale house and inspection building was issued. The previous westbound site only had a 10-foot single scale axle, causing semi-trucks to have to pull up and be weighed on each axle.
Currently, we are working on the design of the new parking lot site improvements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the Weigh Scales useful?
Weigh scale facilities are located on interstate and U.S. highway routes to ensure commercial motor vehicles comply with the laws, rules, and regulations of Missouri. Fixed scale locations are selected based on the volume of commercial motor vehicles operating on interstate or U.S. routes in a particular area. To read more about weigh stations, view MoDOT's Engineering Policy Guide.
Why is the I-44 St. Clair westbound Weigh Scale site closed?
The site was closed in October 2023 in order to reconstruct a new scale, scale house, new inspection building, parking lot and ramp improvements.
When will the eastbound weigh scale site renovations begin?
After the westbound weigh scale site is opened, tentative Mid-2027, the eastbound weigh scale site will be permanently closed, scale and building demolished and will be converted to a truck parking lot only. This will allow more safe locations for trucks to park.
