Why is MoDOT undertaking this project?
Due to deteriorating conditions, a project is planned to replace following three Northwest Missouri bridges in 2023. The project will bring the bridges up to current standards and improve the driving surface. The two bridges in Atchison County are expected to remain open until construction begins, but the bridge on Gentry County YY was closed on January 5, 2023, for structural deterioration.

Project Timeline
MoDOT contracted with consultants Burns & McDonnell, to design the new bridges for the Atchison County Route 46 Little Tarkio Creek Bridge, Atchison County Route 111 Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge and Gentry County Route YY Bear Creek Bridge.
Contractors may submit competitive bids during MoDOT's scheduled lettings. This project is scheduled to be a part of the September 2023 letting. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will consider all submitted bids at their scheduled monthly meeting in October 2023. If the lowest submitted bid meets all necessary criteria, the MHTC may award contracts at that time.
When the project is awarded the Notice to Proceed date -- the earliest date on which the contractor could begin work -- will be in November 2023.
When the contract is awarded, the contractor will work with MoDOT to determine the exact schedule of work.
At this time, each roadway is expected to close during construction. The exact date of the road closure and the planned reopening dates will be established after the contract is awarded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will MoDOT close the road during construction?
Yes, all of the routes will close at the bridge during construction.
What is the planned detour?
There are no planned, signed detours. Motorists will need to seek an alternate route during the closures.
Why not build a bypass?
Based on the cost/benefit ratio, building bypasses would not be a prudent use of taxpayer funds. Bypasses also could have negative impacts and disruption to private property.
Will MoDOT need to acquire any right of way?
No, MoDOT did not need to acquire any temporary or permanent right of way for the Little Tarkio Creek Bridge or the Bear Creek Bridge. MoDOT did acquire a temporary easement for the relocation of a driveway near the Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge.
