WHY IS A NEW BRIDGE NEEDED?
The Route 47 Missouri River Bridge needs to be replaced because of its deteriorating condition. It serves as a vital link for the communities on both sides of the river. The bridge, which opened in 1936, carries about 11,000 vehicles a day. The existing bridge has narrow lanes, no shoulders, restrictive weight limits and requires a regular cycle of rehabilitation work. The new bridge will provide safer and more efficient travel for the many motorists going between Franklin and Warren Counties.
Please note that despite the deteriorating condition of the existing bridge it is safe for travel.
WHERE WILL THE NEW BRIDGE BE BUILT?
The new bridge will be built just upstream (to the west) of the existing bridge.
WHAT WILL THE NEW BRIDGE LOOK LIKE?
The new bridge will have two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders on the inside and outside. MoDOT has worked with local officials and community leaders to design the aesthetics of the bridge, which will include decorative lighting, railing details and decorative columns.
WILL THE NEW BRIDGE INCLUDE A BIKE-PEDESTRIAN LANE?
Yes, the new bridge will have a ten-foot protected bike/pedestrian path.
WHAT IS THE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE?
Construction began in the summer of 2016. The new bridge will be open by late 2018. All construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2019.
WHAT KIND OF TRAFFIC IMPACTS WILL THERE BE?
Off peak lane restrictions are possible and more major impacts are likely once the new bridge is ready to be tied into the existing roadway.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE CURRENT BRIDGE?
The current bridge will be demolished after the new bridge opens to traffic.
WHAT IS THE COST OF THE PROJECT?
The project was awarded to Alberici for approximately $63 million ($62,950,000.00). The project is funded with a combination of federal funds ($45.4 million), state and local funds ($13.8 million) and a TIGER Grant ($10 million).**
**The total amount for the project is $69.2 million, which reflects the cost of MoDOT's inspection and administration of the construction contract.
