Description

The Missouri River bridge, located between Jefferson City and St. Louis, provides a vital link between Warren County to the north and Franklin County to the south.

The Missouri Department of Transportation, along with the City of Washington, Franklin and Warren Counties, the East West Gateway Council of Governments and the Boonslick Regional Planning Commission, have partnered together to replace the deteriorating 1936 bridge.

WHY IS A NEW BRIDGE NEEDED?

The old Route 47 Missouri River Bridge was in need of replacing due to its deteriorating condition.  The bridge, which opened in 1936, carried about 11,000 vehicles a day and served as a vital link to the communities on both sides of the river.  The old bridge has narrow lanes, no shoulders, restrictive weight limits and required a regular cycle of maintenance work. The new bridge provides a safer and more efficient travel for the many motorists going between Franklin and Warren Counties.

WHERE IS THE NEW BRIDGE LOCATED?

The new bridge is located just upstream (to the west) of the old bridge.

WHAT DOES THE NEW BRIDGE LOOK LIKE?

The new bridge has two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders on the inside and outside. MoDOT worked with local officials and community leaders to design the aesthetics of the bridge, which includes decorative lighting, railing details and decorative columns.

DOES THE NEW BRIDGE HAVE A BIKE-PEDESTRIAN LANE?

Yes, the new bridge will have a ten-foot protected bike/pedestrian path.

WHAT IS THE CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULE?

Construction began in the summer of 2016.  The new bridge opened in late 2018.  All construction is expected to be completed by September 2020.

WHAT KIND OF TRAFFIC IMPACTS WILL THERE BE?

There will be occasional lane restrictions with flaggers on hand to direct traffic.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE OLD BRIDGE?

The old bridge was demolished on April 11, 2019.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE PROJECT?

The project was awarded to Alberici for approximately $63 million ($62,950,000.00).  The project is funded with a combination of federal funds ($45.4 million), state and local funds ($13.8 million) and a TIGER Grant ($10 million).  The total amount for the project is $69.2 million, which reflects the cost of MoDOT's inspection and administration of the construction contract.  For more information on the TIGER Grant program go to https://www.transportation.gov/BUILDgrants.
