Informational Meeting about Plan to Replace Route T at Lake Wappapello

SIKESTON-The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold an informational meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 5 to discuss a long-term solution for Route T at Lake Wappapello. The briefing will be held at the Bill Emerson Memorial Visitor Center, located at 10992 Route T, Wappapello, Mo.

During the spring 2011 flood, Route T near Lake Wappapello in Wayne County washed out due to rising lake levels and use of the emergency spillway. A temporary crossing is currently in place, but MoDOT and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are looking for a more permanent solution.

Following the Route T public meeting held in September 2011, MoDOT began examining various alignments where a bridge could be used. However, the Corps has requested that MoDOT not construct or place any material in the transition area.

"With the restrictions presented, there isn't a fiscally responsible way to bridge the transition area," said Project Manager Tim Richmond.

MoDOT has decided to replace the washed out section of Route T with a channel crossing below the transition area.

"Due to physical constraints, the horizontal alignment will be similar to the existing temporary crossing, but the vertical alignment will be greatly improved having gentler grades," said Richmond.
