Safe & Sound Community Briefing Scheduled in Butler County

SIKESTON-The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold an open-house community briefing to discuss additional Safe & Sound bridge improvement projects in Butler County. The briefing will be held Tuesday, June 26 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Neelyville City Hall, located at 150-3 Park Street.

"Those interested in the upcoming projects can stop by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to discuss the project plans with a member of the Safe & Sound team," said District Construction and Materials Engineer Andy Meyer.

Improvements through Safe & Sound were considered to be complete in Butler County after the programmed projects were completed on Routes TT, OO and AA. However, savings were identified and to make the best use of taxpayers' dollars, additional projects were prioritized.

One of the projects added to the statewide Safe & Sound program will replace the Route 142 bridge over Main Ditch in Butler County. Work to replace the bridge is expected to begin in early July, with completion anticipated in late August, weather permitting. The bridge will remain closed as construction is underway.

In addition, the Safe & Sound team is currently investigating the possibility of replacing the Route 142 bridge over Long Slough. The project could be completed in conjunction with the Main Ditch bridge replacement, resulting in one road closure to address two bridges.

The Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program was designed to repair or replace over 800 of the state's lowest-rated bridges in five years. Currently, 745 bridges have been completed, and the program is on track to be completed this fall-over one year ahead of schedule.
