Why is MoDOT proposing this project?

The age and condition of these bridges require either replacement or extensive rehabilitation so they can continue to serve customers for decades to come. More than 30,000 drivers cross through this stretch of I-70 every day so keeping the interstate smooth and safe is paramount.

The Route E bridges were originally constructed in 1959, widened in 1988 and rehabilitated in 2012.

The Route H bridge was constructed in 1960. In January 2013, the bridge received a deck rating and superstructure rating of 3 (serious condition) and was slated for replacement.

Numerous bridge solutions were reviewed and a final recommendation suggests replacing both sets of bridges is the responsible decision for future growth of I-70 and best use of taxpayer funds.

How will this impact traffic during construction?

I-70 will remain open during construction but lanes will be impacted.

For Route E, EB and WB bridge demolition and construction will be coordinated using median crossovers. Route E will be closed during construction.

For Route E, the new bridge will be constructed in the same location as the existing bridge and R

Route H will be closed to traffic throughout the duration. The Route H traffic will be detoured to the west to Route E. The I-70 entrance and exit ramps will be closed and detoured to either Route 13 to the east or Route M to the west and use the outer roads to access Route H.
