CLAY/JACKSON COUNTIES – The Missouri Department of Transportation continues to move forward on the Buck O’Neil Bridge replacement project. The following information is a list of where the project stands.
Construction Update:
Crews have closed southbound US 169, 1.5 miles south of Route 9 (21 days)
Crews will be removing guardrail at this location for pavement widening
Crews will be grading land at this location for building new ramps onto US 169 from Richards Rd. on the north side of Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport
Cranes will be delivered to the construction site (river’s edge)
Crews will continue to prepare for drill shaft work on the Missouri River (future bridge piers)
Building Demolition:
Crews are tentatively set to begin demolition of buildings purchased by MoDOT
Crews may start demo work Monday, September 13
Crews will be salvaging materials (lumber and bricks) from the buildings acquired
Building demo will not impact traffic
None of the buildings set for demolition are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
Interesting/Miscellaneous:
Archeologist from the Missouri Department of Transportation and its construction partners have been on-site for several weeks
They’re looking for potential artifacts from early settlers of Kansas City
Currently crews are searching the area of 4th and Washington St.
According to 1909 insurance maps, a former fireworks factory was once located at the site
Crews found fragments of red brick once believed to be the floor of the fireworks factory
So far, no significant items have been found
Crews will report finding with the Historical Preservation Office
Future Closures:
Crews will close the ramp from northbound I-35 to westbound I-70 from Wednesday, September 15 through Saturday, September 18 (9am – 3:30pm) for bridge inspection work
Crews will close the ramp from Eastbound I-70 to SB I-35 on Thursday, September 16th (9am – 3:30pm) for bridge inspection work
Motorists will have to travel westbound I-670 and then take I-35 northbound to get back on I-70
