Project Details

Why is this work necessary?

This project was identified and has been added to the STIP through the High Priority Unfunded Needs process. Around 56,000 vehicles utilize this corridor of Route 54, between Route 63 and Main Street, every day. The changes proposed in this project would benefit these motorists by creating a safer, more efficient and more reliable traffic flow.

You can find more specifics on the potential changes and maps showing possible reconfigurations below.

When will these changes take place:
Work on this project is expected to take place in 2024.

How will traffic be impacted when work takes place?
Work will require lane shifts, temporary lanes closures, and possibly some temporary narrowed lanes. U.S. Route 54 will remain open through the duration of the project.  Route W interchange will close for rehabilitation work to the bridge.  The Route 54/63/94 interchange will remain open but will have lane closures and lane shifts while bridge rehabilitation work takes place.

More specifics will be announced when the project is awarded.

What is currently happening?

MoDOT is currently accepting public comments and feedback regarding the proposed alternatives included for this project, which can be found below. Online comments are being accepted until January 20 through the web form below.

An in-person, open-house style meeting will also be held on Tuesday, January 10 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Jefferson City John. G. Christy Municipal Building.

How much will this project cost?
The current estimated cost of the project is $2,796,000.

Will Katy Trail or Jefferson City Parks access be impacted?

This depends on the final option configuration selection. Option 1 will not have any impact on the North Jefferson City Recreation Area (NJCRA). Option 2 would have little impact, primarily increased traffic on 4th Street. Option three would have the greatest cost and impact on the NJCRA, as the new loop ramp would require removing and/or relocating several elements such as the playground and basketball courts.

Summary of Proposed Changes & Benefits

The following changes to the corridor will be included in all options:

Changes Benefits
  • Route 54 Enhancements
    • Eastbound Route 54 will be restriped to allow for four lanes across the Missouri River bridge
    • Pavement and shoulders will be expanded to allow for six lanes of traffic between Route 63/Route 94 and the bridge
  •  Route 54 & Route 94 Interchange Enhancements
    • Add an acceleration lane from the eastbound Route 54 exit ramp onto eastbound Route 94
    • Add a deceleration lane from westbound Route 94 onto the eastbound Route 54 on-ramp
  • Route 94 & Wehmeyer Dr./Hitachi Energy entrance intersection will be realigned
  • Improves eastbound traffic flow from Main Street to Route 63/Route 94
  • Provides a more safe transition for traffic entering eastbound Route 54 from Main Street
  • Improves transitions onto and off-of eastbound Route 54 from Route 94
  • Improves safety at Route 94 and Wehmeyer Dr./Hitachi Energy entrance

The project also includes the following options for the reconfiguration for traffic entering westbound Route 54 from Cedar City Dr.

Route 54 & Cedar City Dr. Interchange Benefits to motorists
Option 1 Includes the removal of the current ramp from Cedar City Dr. onto westbound Route 54
  • Increases safety by eliminating the conflict point of traffic entering westbound Route 54
  • Improves flow of traffic for southbound Route 63 and westbound Route 54
  • This option also includes additional shoulder expansion on the acceleration and deceleration lanes at Route 63 & Renz Farm Road
  • Most effective use of tax-payer dollars with other existing routes already in place
  • Does not impact Jefferson City or other properties in northwest of the interchange
Option 2 Relocates the ramp from Cedar City Dr. onto westbound Route 54 to the northwest of the interchange, utilizing 4th St.
  • Maintains more direct-access to westbound Route 54 from Cedar City Dr.
  • Improves flow of traffic for southbound Route 63 and westbound Route 54
Option 3 Relocates the ramp from Cedar City Dr. onto westbound Route 54 to the northwest of the interchange as a loop ramp
  • Maintains more direct-access to westbound Route 54 from Cedar City Dr.
  • Improves flow of traffic for southbound Route 63 and westbound Route 54
  • More consistent with typical interchange configurations
