Work Zone Facts

MoDOT will have hundreds of construction and maintenance projects this year around the state, so this means motorists can expect to see lots of work zones as well. We know work zones can be an inconvenience, but they mean MoDOT is working to make the roads smoother and safer for you, as soon as possible. Why is it important to Drive Smart in work zones?

  • Twenty-three motorists died and 1,559 people were injured in work-zone crashes in 2003.
  • In 2003, one person was killed or injured in a Missouri work-zone crash every 5.5 hours.
  • In 2004, three MoDOT employees were killed and 69 were injured in work zones. Since 1945, 71 MoDOT workers have died as a result of work-zone crashes.
  • More than half of the work-zone crashes occur on the interstates.
  • More males are involved in crashes than females, and drivers 16-25 years of age are involved in more crashes than any other age group.
  • Between 1999 and 2003, 97 people were killed and 5,852 were injured in Missouri work-zone crashes.
