ST. LOUIS - Motorists traveling to the Washington area after midday today should be prepared to use detours to return home.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is advising residents and motorists that flooding may force the closure of Route 47, north of Washington, MO and the Missouri River. The flooding is a result of last night's severe storms.
The sections, north of Route 94 and north of August Bottom Road are projected to flood later today. Motorists near Route 94 should use Route TT to DD as a detour. Motorists near August Bottom Road will be required to use Hermann Bridge or Boone Bridge as a detour if flooding occurs.
MoDOT maintenance crews are using sandbags and closely monitoring these areas for the duration of these conditions. "We will do everything we can to keep the water from the roadway," said Becky Allmeroth, MoDOT's St. Louis district maintenance engineer.
The closure of Route 47 could remain in place through the weekend, depending on weather conditions. Motorists should not attempt to drive on flooded roadways.
