I-64 Regional Traffic Briefing – POST AM RUSH January 7

ST. LOUIS - Traffic flowed similar to a normal morning rush on the first day of the first full workweek after the I-64 closure.  The interstates were moving well with no more than normal congested spots.  The rush time started earlier and peaked earlier.  

"We are very pleased that motorists continue to take efforts to spread out the traffic demands on the regions roads," said MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger.  "Thank you to everyone for flexing work hours, carpooling and using Metro.  If people continue to do these, we will continue to have successful rush periods."

Hassinger noted Ladue Road is heavily congested from Route 141 to downtown Clayton.  There are a lot of schools on or near Ladue Road that must use Ladue Road for their destination.  A normal 12-minute travel time was 23 minutes during the peak time today.  If your commute is from I-270 to I-170, consider Olive or Page for a faster trip than Ladue Road.

Rush Period: 

  • Time = 5:30 a.m.- 8:30 a.m. on interstates,
    • Volumes peaked from 6:30-7:30 a.m. (one hour earlier than normal)

Summary of Trouble Spots:

  • 25-40 % increase in travel times on:
    • Eastbound Manchester, 7-7:30 a.m. peak,
    • Eastbound Page, 7:30-8 a.m. peak,
    • Northbound Lindbergh, 6:30-8 a.m. peak from I-44 to I-70,
    • Northbound 141 at I-44 and at I-64, 6:30-8 a.m.,
  • Northbound Ballas at Clayton had severe delays, 6:30-8 a.m. peak,
  • Elm, Kirkham and Brentwood volumes were up compared to last week, 6:45 to 7:30 a.m. peak,
  • Do not block intersection signs are in place at Hanley and Eager and west bound I-64 off ramp at Hanley.

Incident Report:

·         One crash at eastbound I-70 at Mid Rivers, cleared at 6:30 a.m.

·         One crash on southbound I-55 at Reavis Barracks

Metro information:

  • Ridership is a typical weekday.
  • Park Ride lots summary:
    • North Hanley and Shrewsbury MetroLink lots have a few spaces available
    • Chesterfield Mall has space available
    • I-44 and Route 109 is overflow
    • I-44 and Pacific has space available
  • Express Bus service is arriving downtown early from I-70, I-44 and I-55.
