Traffic on eastbound and westbound Interstate 64 are currently shifted to allow crews to make the connection from the current eastbound I-64 to the new Boone Bridge.
Traffic on eastbound I-64 is shifted to the left both before and after the Boone Bridge. The lanes have been narrowed to 11-feet and the speed limit in the lane shift has been reduced to 50 mph. There is no no lane shift on the bridge itself. The eastbound lane shifts will remain in place until the new eastbound Boone Bridge opens.
Traffic on westbound I-64 past the Boone Bridge is shifted to the right and the lanes are narrowed to 11-feet. This lane shift will be in place until the summer of 2015.
Construction on the new eastbound Boone Bridge is moving right along, but due to some problems getting foundation work completed in the river last spring we have pushed back the scheduled opening date of the new bridge to late spring of 2015. However, we are still on track to finish rehabbing the 1980’s bridge next year and will have it open to westbound traffic in late 2015.
The majority of the lane closures for this project that significantly delay traffic are complete since all the concrete is poured for the foundations in the river. Although there will still be some ramp and lane closures as we proceed with the project, most will take place during non-peak travel times and have little impact to traffic flow. The lane shifts on eastbound and westbound I-64 will remain in place for several more months.
The Monarch Levee Trail remains closed due to construction of the new Boone Bridge. The trail is closed approximately 1,000 feet on either side of the bridge until construction of the new bridge is complete. At that time, the trail will be reopened and users will be able to access the Katy Trail in St. Charles County by the pedestrian pathway on the bridge.
Rendering of new I-64 Daniel Boone Missouri River Bridge and shared-use path
A project to construct a new Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties has been funded. A total of $125 million has been allocated for the project -- that includes money for utility relocation, property acquisition, design and construction of the project.
What is the construction schedule and impact to traffic? (updated September 2014)
2013 = construction begins with work on the new eastbound bridge, the Spirit of St. Louis Blvd bridge over I-64 raised and construction on a new Chesterfield Airport Road Bridge and North Outer Road connection
2014 = the new Chesterfield Airport Road bridge and interchange complete by November 2014
Late Spring 2015 = traffic on the new eastbound bridge by spring 2015
2015 = all traffic in final position in late 2015
2016 = the 1935 westbound bridge will be removed
Why does a new bridge need to be constructed?
The current westbound Daniel Boone Bridge was built in the mid-1930s, making it nearly 80 years old. It was not designed for interstate level traffic and has reached a point where it needs regular preventative maintenance. Moreover the current westbound bridge has three narrow lanes that often get congested during peak travel times.
Where will the new bridge be constructed?
The new bridge will be built upstream from the existing two bridges. Once it is complete, eastbound I-64 traffic will use the new bridge and westbound traffic will be shifted to what is currently the eastbound bridge.
Will the bridge include a bike-pedestrian lane?
A shared used bicycle/pedestrian trail will be built on the upstream side of the new bridge. It will include connections off the bridge to the Monarch Levee Trail on the St. Louis County side and to the KATY Trail on the St. Charles County side.
What will happen to the current 1935 westbound bridge? (updated September 2014)
The current westbound bridge will be removed in 2016 by the contractor.
Walsh-Alberici Team Selected to Build New Bridge
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission selected the design-build contractor for the new I-64 Daniel Boone Bridge on July 10, 2012. The Walsh-Alberici joint venture team, with designer Burns & McDonnell, will build a new bridge to replace the 80-year old westbound bridge. The project will also include removal of the 1935 existing westbound bridge and building a new Chesterfield Airport Road interchange including connecting the North Outer Road to the westbound I-64 on ramp. The project will build a continuous westbound fourth lane from the Chesterfield Airport Road entrance ramp westbound to the Route 94 exit ramp. It will also add a shared use path on the new eastbound bridge connecting the KATY trail to the Monarch Levee Trail.
