Interstate 70-Route K Traffic Flow Improvement Project (in conjunction with the City of O'Fallon)

I-70 Traffic Flow Improvements Project

T.R. Hughes Boulevard to Woodlawn Avenue

70MapOverview

What is the problem in this area?

Congestion and traffic delays are a common problem in this area.  This project, being done in conjunction with the City of O'Fallon, will make improvements to the interchange at Interstate 70 and Route K, as well as make improvements on the outer roads between T.R. Hughes Boulevard and Woodlawn Avenue.

What exactly is being done?

The following improvements will be made to I-70:

  • Relocating the exit and entrance ramps between Route K and T.R. Hughes Boulevard
  • Extending the acceleration lane from Route K to westbound I-70

In addition, a new, one-way south outer road for eastbound traffic will be built between Route K and T.R. Hughes Boulevard.  The new road will be called Drennen Parkway.  Other changes being made to the outer roads include:

  • Converting the existing north outer road for one-way, westbound traffic
  • Building a new connection from the north outer road to East Terra Lane at School Road
  • Building a new connection from the south outer road to the east of Route K and I-70

Improvements to Route K include:

  • Construction of a third southbound lane from I-70 to just south of Veterans Memorial Parkway
  • Construction of a third northbound lane from Bramblett Road to the new south outer road
  • The removal of the existing intersection and traffic signal at Terra Lane
  • Construction of a multi-use bike/ped path on Route K between Mariae Drive and Veterans Memorial Parkway

For more information on the project and how to get around once construction is complete, please see the below project maps:

What kind of traffic impacts will there be?

There will be off-peak lane closures on I-70 and Route K.  Additional closure information will be posted here as it becomes available.

The north outer road between Route K and Hilltop Way closed on June 18 for 45 days to allow the road to be converted to one-way traffic.  Click on the map below to see how to get around the closure.

How long will construction take?

Construction began in May 2018 and will run through late 2018.

How much will the project cost?

The project was awarded to Millstone Weber for $15 million.  MoDOT is paying for approximately $4.4 million of the project, with the City of O'Fallon paying for the rest.
