I-55 West Outer Road Bridge Replacement
Project Over Rock Creek

What Is The Problem With The I-55 West Outer Road Bridge Over Rock Creek?

The I-55 West Outer Road bridge over Rock Creek was built in approximately 1965 and needs to be replaced. This bridge has only one lane in each direction with no shoulders.

What Is The Proposed Solution?

MoDOT will replace the existing I-55 West Outer Road bridge over Rock Creek. The new bridge will still have one through lane in each direction, but will also have a dedicated left and right turning lane from the West Outer Road to Seckman Road. Six-foot shoulders will also be added to west side of the bridge. The shoulders will extend past Old Antonia Road to meet the existing shoulders.

Will The West Outer Road And Seckman Road intersection Be Signalized?

The intersection will not be signalized but the three all-way stop signs currently at the intersection will remain in place.

Close The West Outer Road – vs.– Leave The Road Open:

MoDOT is asking the community to help decide whether the West Outer Road should stay open or remain closed while construction is under way. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages of either option.

Option 1: Close the West Outer Road:

  • Bridge construction could be completed in approximately 3 months.
  • Construction costs would be reduced by approximately $70,000. The savings would come from reduced traffic control costs and construction work needed to keep the bridge open.
  • MoDOT has flexibility to schedule when the bridge closure would take place. MoDOT would work with the community to determine the best possible closure date.
  • Motorists would detour to Imperial Main Street or Richardson Road to bypass the road closure.

Option 2: Keep the West Outer Road Open:

  • Construction would take approximately 6 months to complete.
  • No detour would be required, which would result in less inconvenience for motorists.

Estimated Project Cost:

Estimated construction cost to improve the I-55 West Outer Road bridge over Rock Creek: Approximately $869,000 if the project is staged and the bridge remains open during construction, and approximately $799,000 if the bridge is closed during construction.
