Interstate 44 at Route 50 Improvements

Project Updates and Alerts (updated 4/26)

The lanes on eastbound and westbound I-44 are narrowed at Route 50 through the duration of the project.  Drivers will have two, 10-foot lanes with no inside shoulder on eastbound I-44 and one 11-foot and one 12-foot lane on westbound I-44.  Please use caution when traveling through the area.

What is the problem on I-44 at Route 50?

The eastbound I-44 bridge over Route 50 is old and in need of repairs.  MoDOT will replace the bridge with a new and wider bridge.

How will traffic be impacted during construction?

The work will require off-peak, overnight and weekend lane closures.  In addition, lanes will be narrowed throughout construction.  Short term full closures of I-44 will be necessary to set girders and for demolition of the current bridge.

When will the project start and when will it be completed?

The project is expected to begin in March and will be completed in late October 2018.

What is the cost of the project?

The project was awarded to Millstone Weber for $4.9 million.

What else is being done on I-44 in Franklin County?

Other projects this construction season on I-44 include:

  • Pavement improvements between Route 30 and the Crawford County line.  That project will have one lane closed during off-peak times.  Work starts this summer and ends in the fall of 2019.
  • The St. Mary's Road bridge over I-44 is closed through the middle of August while crews replace it.  Drivers can detour around the closure by taking Route O to Route AT.
